Child Anxiety: Steps to Reduce It

Anxiety and stress in an adult world is an acceptable part of life and something which most of us experience on a regular basis. For children, however, stressful situations can be extremely traumatic and a cause of great concern. Very often they do not understand and are not able to cope well if left to their own devices.

1. Experiment With Music

For many people in all age groups, finding the right kind of music can work wonders to encourage relaxation or venting anger. When your child is showing signs of anxiety symptoms, switch on the music and talk about what you’re hearing or encourage them to dance to the beat. It will help distract them from the source of anxiety, and the music may help soothe their nerves.

2. Give Your Child Reassurance Frequently

Children with anxiety disorder tend to need more reassurance than a child without anxiety. If your child has the constant need to please people, he may be anxious over a fear of failure. Providing your child with a frequent reassurance that you love him and are proud of his accomplishments regardless of the outcome of test scores or when your child attempts something new, can help the child feel more relaxed about the situation.

3. Acknowledge the Need for “Babying” at Times

Children with an anxiety disorder may require things that seem age inappropriate. For example, an 8-year-old with anxiety may want to sit on your lap and be rocked at times – don’t get overly concerned that he’s “too old” for this type of cuddling and don’t be afraid to baby your child now and then if he needs it. It can go a long way to helping a child with anxiety symptoms to relax.

4. Distract Your Child From the Anxiety

The trouble with child anxiety is that the child experiences some form of stress or fear, and then their body starts having physical reactions. The child cannot stop focusing on the uncomfortable feelings happening in his body, which only serves to increase and prolong the anxious response. They are incapable of dealing with the stress or fear, and can’t move on from it which just creates a cycle of anxious feelings. As the parent of a child with anxiety, you can help by distracting your child from the stress reaction. Put in a movie, invite a friend over, go for a walk, play a game with them, read a book. Anything you can do to help get the child’s mind off the way his body is responding to the situation will help the reaction to the stress subside and relieve anxiety.
